The latest trophy for the Tame Impala mastermind comes just days after he won Songwriter of the Year at the 2021 APRA Music Awards.
Kevin Parker has continued his blessed winning streak as a songwriter, this time joining an exclusive club: APRA AMCOS’ 1,000,000,000 List.
With over one billion streams of ‘The Less I Know The Better’, Parker has been added to a list of artists including Flume, Gotye, Tones And I, Sarah Aarons and Vance Joy.
It’s a pretty big achievement for Parker, who only just won one of the top awards at the APRA Music Awards last week – the coveted Songwriter of the Year award. On the night, Mark Ronson (who was a special surprise presenter), spoke about the #1 song of our Hottest 100 of the Decade countdown as being iconic.
“…What I love the most at the root of it is the songs. The hooks, the melodies and that can mean a great chorus or vocal line or the hookiest bass line you’ve ever heard.” he said.
“You think of ‘The Less I Know The Better’ – it’s one of the most iconic bass lines of the past 20 years.”
Originally written for Ronson, ‘The Less I Know The Better’ was a song that Parker felt so attached to that he knew it had to be a Tame Impala track.
“During the recording session, I was working myself up to tell him I was going to take it back,” he’s said.
Luckily, Parker didn’t have to have that awkward convo, Ronson told him he should keep the track for his own project and well…the rest is history.
Other songs that have made it to The 100,000,000 List include ‘Never Be Like You’ by Flume, ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ by Gotye, ‘Youth’ by Troye Sivan and of course, Tone And I’s ‘Dance Monkey’. If you’re a stats nerd and want to see the full list, check it out here.
