Canadian-born Eilleen Regina “Shania” Twain did not have an easy life growing up. She began singing in bars in 1981 when she was just 8 years old to help her family pay their bills. By the time she was 13, she was invited to perform on the CBC’s Tommy Hunter Show. Around the same time, she joined a local band called Longshot, which covered Top 40 hits.
After Longshot broke up, she joined another cover band following her high school graduation called Flirt and began touring with them. Her Huntsville manager set up a showcase for her to present her songs to record executives, where she caught the eye of a few labels, including Mercury Nashville Records. Mercury Nashville Records signed the budding country star within a few months, during which time “Eileen” became “Shania.” In April 1993, her self-titled debut album was released. Though it only made it to number 67 on the U.S. Country Album Chart, she did earn positive reviews for her first foray.
Rock producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange noticed her success, and he would become instrumental in Twain’s success. After meeting in June 1993, the two were married that December. Together, the new couple wrote or co-wrote the songs on her second album, The Woman in Me, which dropped in February 1995.
